Christmas Fun

I got my very own Christmas present! I was so excited. And then when it squeeked as I was unwrapping it I got even more excited.  I was so pleased Santa hadn't left me out, I was dancing around and thought I was going to wag my stump off!

It turned out to be a squeeky hedgehog.  I L O V E squeeky toys. Trouble is I get a bit too carried away and they don't last too long. In fact Mr Hedgehog only managed to make it to Boxing Day before his squeeking days were over.

But I had a great time playing with Auntie Caz on Christmas and Boxing Day with it. I know Caz doesn't really like dogs... but I guess she's a bit like Grandma - she doesn't like dogs either. I'm all confused?

Well Christmas day was great I got loads of turkey and pork scraps as a treat. Yummy. But I think Caz had too many sprouts, 'cos I kept getting blamed for making smelly noises later.

Early Morning Fit

03:50 Dad took me up to sleep in their bedroom after my earlier seizure. I woke them early in the morning having another fit. This time it was the same as the previous, where it looked as if it was going to subside after the first upright convulsions, but in fact turned into a much longer event.

Dad managed to help me down the stairs to get outside for some air and do my business.  Afterwards I was so tired dad couldn't wake me to go back upstairs.

Evening Seizure

Dave and Grandma came round tonight to say goodbye for 3 months as they are going away to Australia on holiday.

22:50 Whilst snoozing by dad watching the TV a seizure started.  Dad said it looked like it was going to be a mild one as after sitting upright and jaws and head spasming I seemed to come out of it.  But then rolled over and began the usual violent spasms.

Morning Seizure

06:50 Dad is usually up by now and he said something strange went on as I came upstairs onto the landing then went straight back downstairs. Normally if I go upstairs I'll sleep on the landing floor. Today I started fitting as I was downstairs.

Dad came down and looked after me.  Made sure I didn't bump into things and made sure I could get outside afterwards.

Mum came down and fed me and said that it may be down to dad forgetting to give me my evening tablets. Mum gave them to me very late at 23:00

Still, dad took me into work with him today so I get to spend the day with him.

Exercise Overdose

Dad went out to meet some people in his car on Saturday and that meant he wasn't going to be back until very late. This means no "walkies" for me!

But as luck would have it just before dad went out all the lights went out. There was a power cut. So with dad gone and mum not able to do anything, mum and Blaine took me out for a walkies! Yay, now if only I could figure out how to turn the electric off.

On Sunday dad wasn't at all shaky or holding his head muttering about an over hang or something, as expected. So we went to "Doggy Disney" and went for a proper walk. Not just a short route around the woods but all over. It was great! I got to chase those pesky squirrels for ages.

The good thing about this was that later that day and the following day my legs were much, much better than they have been in the past. These new tablets mum forces me to take are working wonders. It's fun watching mum think I've swallowed the tablet, when I haven't. Still I take it eventualy, but where would there be any fun if I took it first time?

Today dad took me out in the car to get his MOT done and we waked back through some green areas from the garage - about half an hours walk. It was great to be in places where I'd not been before - all the new smells to investigate.

Then in the afternoon we walked back to fetch the car. All this walking is great. Now I just need to find time for a decent nap.

Back to see the Vet

Well following the seizures over the past few days dad took me to see the Doctor today.

As usual I was on my best behaviour. There were plenty of other dogs there this time and one strange white fluffy thing that reminded me of a fluffy Christmas star. It was very odd because it smelled like a dog and when it turned round it had eyes and a nose! Strangest dog I've ever seen.

Dad put me on the scales which now I know what they are makes them not scary at all. I just hopped right on and sat down with no fuss. That was until dad called me a fat dog... I'd put on a kilo and was nearly 42kgs today - I put it down to my winter coat. Dad says it might be the tablets (but not sure which ones) as I've certainly got an appetite these days. I eat all my breakfast and dinner usually in one sitting which isn't like me.

The vet did the usual stuff checking my eyes and listening to my heart - and the thermometer bit which I'd rather not talk about.

With nothing else to do for it the dosage of the Epiphen was raised to 90mg in the morning and 120mg in the evening to see if this provides better control. This effectivley increases by half a tablet in the evening.

Another Seizure

20:00 Today seemed like a repeat of yesterday. I was lying there snoozing and the seizure started.

Tonight's was a little different in that I spent a minute sitting up seizing. Then as it seemed to calm, it came back with a fury and and went into full spasm writhing on the floor for a minute.  It turned out to be probably the longest seizure to date.

Afterwards I was very dazed and confused and dad had to put my lead on as I was charging around the kitchen bumping into things.

Minutes later Grandma and Dave came round and I couldn't help myself. I'm always happy to see them but I guess they weren't anticipating being covered in slobber as I tried to say hello and get a fuss.

Seizure's Return

20:20 I had a seizure tonight.  Again I was sleeping so don't know much about it. Dad said I woke up and looked around as if I'd seen something behind me, then started fitting. Same thing as before legs pumping and teeth chomping.

This time I only urinated as I came postictal and the muscles relaxed. Then was munchy and dad gave me a few handfuls of gravy bones, yum!

Dad says I came out of it fairly quickly, even though the seizure seemed about the same. Whilst not completely with it at least I seemed to recognise him and followed him outside to pace a little.

I then had a couple (2) of Epiphen (120mg) to try to prevent a recurrence tonight, so let's see what happens.

It had been 1 Month and 7 days since my last seizure.

Test Results

Well the Doctor phoned mum today and talked with her about my blood test results.  Looks like the 90mg of Epiphen is staying in my blood stream at a theraputic level for the 12 hours between tablets.

Good news as this means the dosage stays the same.

The Previcox seems to be doing a great job.  I'm a lot more mobile and even after a trip to "Doggy Disney" on Saturday, I was still mobile in hte evening and on Sunday.  Previously I've hobbled around a little uncomfortable for a day or two afterwards - but this time I was ready for going out again on Sunday!

I did notice that Monday I had a very runny number two - yeauch!  As this seems to be a possible side effect of the Previcox dad's going to keep an eye on it and make sure that it's nothing regular.

Blood Test Day

Well today dad took me back to the vets so the Doctor could take some blood. They need to figure out if the daily dose at 90mg of Epiphen is remaining in my bloodstream sufficiently to keep the seizures at bay.

The Doctor trusted me without a muzzle and got dad to hold me whilst he stuck the needle in to take the blood, and I didn't struggle or even make a sound. After all it's not as bad as having my temperature taken!!!

So far it's been 29 days since my last seizure, which is a very good thing.

Dad asked the Doctor about my legs which give me some discomfort after running about a bit. So he took a look see and felt around my hips and knees and it looks like my discomfort may be more related to my knees than my hips.

The Doctor signed me up for a treatment of Previcox (firocoxib) at 227mg per day (5mg per kg of weight, I'm 40kgs right now). The Doctor said to keep an eye out for side effects such as vomiting or diarrhoea.

After shopping around it looks as if Previcox is available far more cheaply online (I got dad to do this bit) than it is at the vets. It also seems it can have some quite severe side affects as with some other NAIDS (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), so we're going to have to ask some questions on the next visit.

Without insurance the Epiphen and Previcox work out at £57 per month! So any saving to be made here is very useful.

UPDATE: Attached is the clinical trial report for Previcox (firocoxib, Merial) [Click here for PDF]

How Rude!

Grrrr! Angry FaceGrrrr! Just how rude are some people?

I ran out of prescription pills today so dad went to the vet's to get some more. He decided to get there early so he could still make it to work and not be too late in.

I guess he figured they opened at 8:00am this morning so got there just before at about 7:45am. Some people who worked there turned up and went in around 8:00am - I guess this was the early crew to feed and water the over night visitors.

At around 8:20am a few more cars turned up, people waiting inside.

So at 8:30am when the receptionist opened the door, not just one but four people rushed from their cars with only one thing in mind "ME FIRST!". No thought for any one there before them, just "me, me, me".

Next time I'm going with him to get them to back off and wait their turn :)

Doggy Disney

Dad took me to my favorite place again today, he calls it "Doggy Disney" as it's as much fun a dog can handle!  Open woods with a mixture of walkways suited and accessible to all.

Binley Woods in Coventry (wooded area South of the marker) is a 4-5 mile drive from home but well worth the trip.  I get so excited when I realise where we're going.  Chasing squirrels and rabbits - not much hope of catching one, but I love the thrill of the chase.

It's also a pretty quiet wood in terms of other people.  We don't often see anyone else there at all, maybe 'cos it's so big, but whatever the reason it's mostly like we have our own private play park.

Only trouble is it plays up with my hip displasia.  It's not a bad one but after all this exercise my hips ache for a day or so afterwards.  I just can't help myself from running around crazy and having fun.

Glucosamine
Dad's ordered some Glucosamine tablets to see if they can help ease my aching hips.  I know mum and dad don't like hearing or seeing me struggle around with aching legs - but the visit to the woods is such a treat to enjoy, it's hard to put a limit on it.

Oops!

Dad's been off work this week - something about having too much vacation time left over.  So this means I get to be with him all day and get to go for longer walks.

Clouds with Legs
We went out along the canal walk today and for the first time ever the empty field we cross through was full of clouds with legs.

Dad put me on the lead and we walked through them passing very close to the "sheep" as they came over interested in who we were.  They were directly in front of the gate we needed to go through.

I impressed dad with how good I am by just looking at the sheep and walking calmly by without incident.

Further around the canal path there was a dog barking in a boat and as I went to see I slipped on the edge and slid ungracefully into the water!  I'm not a bad swimmer but the sides of the canal are vertical steel and the bank is two feet above the water line.  I was in between two boats so couldn't swim around.

Dad grabbed me by the scruff of my neck but as much as he pulled he couldn't lift me.  He ended up lying in the mud and wrestling me by the scruff up and over him.  I ended up covering him in water and in my panic stepped all over him and on his face.

Dad stood up all wet with his glasses on backwards!  Definatley a "You've Been Framed" moment (my favourite TV show)

Dad's isn't quite this bad
Well it wasn't until he got home he realised that I'd trodden in his eye and my claws had scratched him. What started out as a small purple scratch turned into a big purple bruise and he ended up with a swollen and black eye!

More Blood Tests

09:00 Back in the car to the doctors with dad again.

When the doctor came to see me she said she was looking forward to seeing this big friendly dog the nurses where talking about. I was so proud that they all thought I was good.

This time they take me into another room so they can shave a little of my fur off on my neck so they can take more blood. They stuck a big needle in but I didn't make a noise, I just wanted to get back to dad as soon as.

I also got some Pentobarbitone tablets "Epiphen (60mg)" to take 1 1/2 (90mg) - twice daily. Dad has to hold open my mouth and drop them all the way to the back so I can swallow the tiny pills. Hiding them in cheese or food is just too easy for me to find. If I can eat a bowl of food with peas and gravy and manage to leave the peas, spitting out a tablet is just as easy.

So far it's been nearly two days since my last seizure and that's been without having any tablets.

After the doctors dad took me to another big park for a run around. This really isn't so bad!

Then grandma and Dave came round to see me - I was so happy to see them. I really like grandma and get all excited whenever I hear her outside. She was all upset about me I think... but grandma doesn't really like dogs?

Back to See the Doctor

This is me, happy in the parkThankfully I've not had another seizure today.

10:40 Mum and Dad put me in the car and took me to see the doctor again. Looks like I'll be here a lot more.

I saw Eli again and she took my temperature (which I don't like much) and listened to my heart again.

Dad spoke with Eli about Pentobarbital and Potassium Bromide to control the seizures and tried to figure out which would be best. Dad uses his computer to check out all kinds of information and was worried about the long term effects of Pentobarbital on my liver.

Eli's very good and explains clearly that there are risks and that getting the medication right is important.  The risk of liver damage balanced against the continued seizures effects on my brain seems a fair option.

The first blood test results didn't show anything abnormal so another more detailed look at insulin level and pancreatic functions are suggested. As I've had trouble with my weight and appetite there could be some pancreatic relationship.

So we are asked to revisit the surgery tomorrow after starving for 12 hours to take more blood.

This time it's not so bad, mum and dad take me to a park and let me out to have a run around for an hour.

Early Morning Wake Up Call

01:20 Well I'm beginning to see a pattern to this now.  Thankfully mum and dad are too.  So I spend the night in their bedroom again and wake them up with another seizure.

If it carries on like this the next one will be around 8:30-9:00 tomorrow.  Just before I can go to the doctor again.

Evening Seizure

19:30 This time I was asleep in my bed again.  Dad had to tip me out of my bed as I'd ended up half in and half out.

This is getting a bit too regular and mum and dad are frustrated that they can't get me to a doctor on a Sunday.

Lunchtime Seizure

13:30 I was laying in my bed fast asleep when the convulsions started again.

Exactly the same as the previous times - convusions, pacing, toilet, food and a confused and disorrientated hour later before I was back to myself.

This time I messed in the kitchen and then more embarrasment as I steped in my poop and then paced it all over the kitchen floor!  Mum was understanding and moped it all up and changed my bedding again.  I'm sure they're running out of towels by now.

Another Seizure

Because of my previous seizures mum and dad let me sleep on the floor in there bedroom.  This was a real treat as I don't usually get away with it. I'm a people dog and like being with them.

05:00 I woke mum and dad up having another seizure - apparently it looks real scary me thrashing about and snapping my jaws.

The embarrassing part is that when I have one a little wee sprays out, so it was lucky mum put a towel down for me to lie on.

After the initial seizure my post seizure actions seem strange. Still confused and scared but now also in desperate need of the toilet and food. I paced around wildly and a little uncoordinated and this strange person who looked like dad wouldn't let me go down the stairs.  So I peed and pooped on the floor in the bedroom!

When I was a little more coordinated dad took me downstairs and I ravenously ate everything left in my bowl and had a big drink of water.

It still took me an hour to recognise mum and dad as I was still so confused from the seizure.

Still Unhappy

23:30 As I'm asleep in my bed again another seizure starts.  Thankfully they happen when I'm sleeping safely somewhere - aparently some get seizures when awake and walking around.  Thankfully being asleep and in a comfy place means there's not much that I can hurt myself on.

Well it happened again...

18:30 Mum was just about to go out.  She was all dressed up looking and smelling nice.  I was in the bedroom with dad, asleep whilst he worked on the computer - he's always there.

Then the convulsions started and dad moved me away from things I could knock against.  When I came to I was very confused and scared.  I looked over at dad and really didn't see him as who he was.  I was so scared of him I growled very meaningfully that whoever he was should back off and leave me alone.

Once I'd paced around a while I calmed down and realised he meant no harm, I then went into an hour long fog of confusion.  It's like I was no longer scared of things, but I didn't recognise anyone or understand what they were saying.

After a bit of sleep I was back to my old self.  No one would know anything strange had happened.

Mum came home late all giddy and wobbly and smelling funny.  She was hugging me and crying and I didn't know why.

First Scary Event

08:30 Well something strange and scary happened this morning.  I was lying fast asleep in my bed in the kitchen and scared Blaine as he came into the kitchen for breakfast by shaking uncontrollably, convulsing and rolling my eyes, gnashing my teeth and foaming at the mouth.

By the time mum and dad got to me I was breathing heavily and looking confused and scared, not recognising anyone around me.

Mum tried to wipe the slobber from my face but I didn't know who she was or what she was trying to do, that towel looked scary, so I growled at her menacingly - I must have been out of it, as I'd never normally behave like that.

They left me alone and called the doctor to see what should be done.

After an hour of being really bewildered I then came out of it and realised I knew where I was and who my family were.  They were making such a fuss and I couldn't understand why, I'd just woken up.

At the Veterinary Surgery

They then took me to see the doctor who gave me a checkup and although I'd only just met him he got quite personal and took my temperature and listened to my heart.  Then it was time for a needle to take some blood.

Now I'm a big girl and look quite scary, so I understand why the doctor wanted me to wear a muzzle.  I've never had to wear one but I let him do it any way.  He took the blood from my right foreleg and I never even made a sound.

Now the doctor said I should rest up and not get excited that day but when I'm in the car it usually means walkies.  I was disappointed to just go home.
